Levante: What is and how can you enjoy it

If you have come to Cádiz or have been here at some point, you will have heard someone complain about “levante” or “poniente”. You know that they are? Do you know how you can take advantage of these two “drawbacks”?

What is the Levante and the Poniente?

These are two types of wind. Their main difference is the direction they come from. The levante is the wind coming from the East and the poniente comes from the West. The peculiarity of the east is that it originates in the central part of the Mediterranean Sea but reaches its maximum speed when it passes through the Strait of Gibraltar.

Why are they inconvenient?

  • The levante is a warm wind, quite warm. Makes the temperature rise considerably. On the other hand, the west is cool.
  • If it is not to your liking, it usually takes time to finish. This wind usually lasts between three and four days. We call it “levantera”.
  • The levante attracts a lot of seaweed and a lot of waves. This can be both a drawback and a huge advantage (read on and see how to adapt).
  • In the vast majority of the beaches, they are harmed by the levante, since the wind, if it is very strong, lifts the sand in a very unpleasant way.

How to take advantage of the lift?

Do not panic! There are thousands of things to do when you jump in the lift. Here are some alternatives:

  • Practice water sports such as surfing, windsurfing …: The levante brings a lot of waves, so the best thing you can do if you want to enjoy the beach is to take the surfboard and ride a wave. The days of lifting are the best to practice these sports.
  • Fishing: Although seaweed and waves can make fishing difficult, you can find some good loot. The lift moves the food of the fish and they have to go out to look for it.

  • Practice bird watching: These strong winds make bird watching much easier and easier than a normal day. The levante diverts and brings migratory birds to our province.
  • Hiking: An activity that can be done together with the previous one mentioned. The levante wind can be annoying to spend a day at the beach, so why not go to the mountains?
  • Visiting museums: Most likely, the days of the levante are hotter than usual, so if you want to go sightseeing, we recommend going to museums. You will learn about the culture and history of the city in a cool place, safe from the heat of the street.

  • Visit white villages: As already mentioned, the beach is not the ideal place to be. A great alternative for the sun and the beach is rural tourism. You can take great surprises with the beautiful white villages, much cooler than the cities and the beach.
  • Try the gastronomy with a tapas route: It is a fantastic alternative to get to know the city and the culture of the city, avoiding the heat of the east and having a great time.
