The Clipper Race, the world’s largest and most challenging ocean race, is making its debut in Spain with a unique stopover in El Puerto de Santa María. From September 9th to 11th, the participating boats in this prestigious round-the-world regatta will arrive at Puerto Sherry, marking Spain’s only stopover in this grueling and inclusive global sailing event.

After departing from the port of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom on September 3rd, the fleet is currently sailing approximately 1,200 nautical miles south towards Spain, where they will make their first stop in Puerto Sherry. This is a new destination in the Clipper Race circuit, and it serves as a gateway to their transatlantic journey to Punta del Este, Uruguay. Puerto Sherry will become the epicenter of the global sailing community and host a sporting event with significant social, tourism, and economic impact on the city and province.

The week-long stopover in Puerto Sherry is a unique opportunity for visitors to discover the beauty, culture, and hospitality of the region. In collaboration with the Tourism Department of El Puerto de Santa María, Puerto Sherry has organized various guided tours of the city’s tourist attractions and surrounding areas. Additionally, there will be open house days to explore the race boats and participate in various tourism and environmental activities, allowing residents to experience this unprecedented event firsthand.

The Clipper Race is a unique event with more than 700 participants ranging in age from 18 to 71, representing 55 nationalities and diverse professional backgrounds. The fleet consists of 70-foot ocean racing yachts, and over the next eleven months, the teams will face some of the harshest and most varied conditions as they sail to some of the world’s most remote and inhospitable places. Each of the eleven participating boats is crewed by a professional skipper, a first mate, and amateur crew members who will together cover 40,000 nautical miles, visiting six continents in eight stages.

Spain has nine participants in the regatta, including Fausto Preito from Asturias. He traded a 25-year career in humanitarian work for 11 months of sailing around the world aboard the UNICEF team. Before departing, he shared his excitement, saying, “It’s a mix of emotions. I’m thrilled, but before embarking, I wasn’t a sailor, so I have some fears, but I’m looking forward to setting sail and testing myself in the toughest conditions.”
