Must see in El Puerto de Santa María

El Puerto de Santa Maria or the City of a Hundred Palaces, because it has elegant palatial houses where ancients’ important merchants lived. This city has many tourist attractions, from kilometres of golden sandy beaches to some of the best food you’ll ever taste. It also has many wineries and monuments not to be missed. There are many things that you must visit in El Puerto de Santa María.

The  Castillo de San Marcos  is a castle that was built in the 12th century, but it is in perfect condition of use. It also has a winery, so you can do wine tastings inside the castle itself. There are also incredible wineries, where you can finish your wine tasting with a meal in a tapas restaurant. Who would not like to wine tasting in a castle?

 

In this city there are several churches, the best known of which is the Basílica Menor de Nuestra Señora de los Milagros. It is a 15th century church where in the past there were catacombs inside.

There are 16 kilometres of magnificent beaches, where you can enjoy the sun every day of the year. On these beaches you can practise water sports such as surfing. In addition, there are beach bars where you can enjoy the best meals while watching the sea scenery. You can even look at the sunset while you drink a delicious cocktail. Another perfect place to watch the sunset is Puerto Sherry. Here you can see it from restaurants and even from a boat in the bay of Cadiz.

 

The Monasterio de la Victoria is an old convent, which later became a prison. Today it has been restored and it is a building in which various cultural and official events are held.

El Puerto de Santa Maria is the birthplace of the poet Rafael Alberti. Here we can find the Rafael Alberti Foundation where we can find his memories. Pedro Muñoz Seca, writer of the Generation of 14, was also born in this city.

You cannot leave El Puerto without trying its spectacular gastronomy. You can taste the fried fish, visit its incredible tapas bars, and even visit the 3 Michelin Star restaurant of Ángel León. Which site would you choose?

If you love sports you can practise some in this city, as it has soccer field, basketball and tennis courts and even golf courses. You can also ride a bike in the Natuaral Park of Los Toruños. This is a park that has areas for walking and cycling routes, and has a small beach. Do not miss the opportunity to enjoy the sport in this corner of Andalusia.

 

Golf Time

Another place you should visit is the Bajamar’s Avenue, enjoy a walk along the Guadalete river while watching the boats. Nearby there are important historical buildings such as the Hospital de San Juan de Dios, or better known as “El Hospitalito“. Another place near the Bajamar’s Avenue is the Fountain of the Galleys. It is a fountain designed as the final destination of an underground aqueduct in 1735.

A location you can’t miss in El Puerto is Valdelagrana. Here there ir a beautiful beach and a promenade where you can stroll around. It also has a wonderful restaurants and bars.

Without a doubt El Puerto de Santa Maria is one of the best cities in Andalusia, where you can enjoy its spectacular landscapes and incredible monuments. Its gastronomy is spectacular, and you won’t be able to resist tasting it. What are you waiting for?
