History around every corner

If you are a lover of history and art, you can enjoy many historical spots around the city. From the Museum of Cádiz where you can find archaeological remains found throughout the province. There is also art exhibitions. Even when you are on the beach you see history: on the beach of La Caleta, you look at the horizon, you can see the castles of Santa Catalina and San Sebastián.

Archaeological corners

Remains of different archaeological sites from different periods have been found throughout the city. The vast majority can be visited because they have been respected and protected in the same place where they were found, such as the Gadir sites hidden in Calle San Miguel or the sites in the Casa del Obispo. If not, for their protection, they have been transferred to the Museum of Cádiz.

Mythology class

According to Greco-Roman mythology, the tenth work of Hercules was in the province of Cádiz. He came here with Eurystheus. He had to steal the oxen from the colossal Geryon. They was aided by the god Helio, the sun god, to navigate there. He defeated the colossus after a hard fight with a shot from an arrow and took the cattle all over Europe back to Greece, to the city of Maecenas. For this feat, a temple to Hercules was erected in Sancti Petri, which Christians destroyed in the reconquist and built the Sancti Petri lighthouse on top.

Historical theater

The Gran Teatro Falla, which is located in Plaza Fragela. Its construction began in 1884, but it was inaugurated in 1910. Its style is neo-Mudejar. When you see its facade, it reminds you of the Mosque of Córdoba, for its famous red and white brick arches. It is the place where the Cádiz Carnival Group Competition takes place. It’s pne of the most iconic monuments of the city, it represent the city.

The home of carnival

During mid-January and February, people from all over the world gather in the city, especially around the Falla Theater to listen and enjoy the troupes and groups. The most typical thing is to meet with a group of friends, dress up and spend the day walking around the city, looking for where the best groups are placed and listen to the best troupes. It is also a tradition to see the final of the contest that lasts all morning.

Holy week

Holy Week is, practically in the entire province of Cádiz, a very special moment. For a week (even before), steps began to walk through the streets of the city, followed by the faithful of that church in the clothes of penitents and with a music band. These steps are representations of the Passion; death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. There are also scenes of the Virgin or other saints. The faithful or brothers of a church accompany the passage throughout its journey through the city until its return to the church.

Last year, there was a traffic of more than 50,000. Cádiz is a place that receives and welcomes many tourists and foreigners. Cruises usually stop in the port of Cádiz for a couple of days so it is not surprising to see large cruise ships from all over the world in the port.

Canyoned city

Many battles have wanted to take place here and conquer it, but it failed. Almost every corner you can find cannons.
