Jerez Flamenco Festival

The Jerez Flamenco Festival is one of the first flamenco festivals of the year. It takes place every year in February. There are two weeks of live flamenco shows in the main theaters, and wineries in the city. The main focus of the Festival is at ” Teatro Villamarta”, a Foundation that organizes the aforementioned festival together with the Jerez Town Hall.

Flamenco’s importance

Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, is the birthplace of the art of Flamenco. Therefore, tourists from all over the world come to enjoy its shows. The shows have an excellent reputation and supporters from all over the world highly demand them.

Tourists arrive in the region captivated by the flamenco legend, by its colour, spectacularity and dramatic staging.

Furthermore, Unesco considers flamenco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2010.

A fact which strengthens and asserts the importance of this hallmark of Andalusian artistic expression. Such significant recognition also highlights its national and international importance. A fun fact is that there are more Flamenco schools in Japan than in Spain.

It is a real delight for those who are fond of good singing, playing and dancing to experience flamenco. The main figures of flamenco art have passed through the Festival in all these years of life; from La Paquera de Jerez, Agujetas, Manuel Moneo, Capullo de Jerez, Juan Moneo El Torta or Fernando de la Morena and María del Mar Moreno, as local artists, to Miguel Poveda, Israel Galván, Cañizares, El Pele, Dorantes, Rocío Molina , María Pagés and a long etcetera.

2022 Festival

This year, The festival goes from the 20th February all the way through to the 7th March, It will be the Twenty-sixth edition of the Festival de Jerez. If you are keen on art and flamenco, you can’t miss it.

In this years’ edition there will be a greater number of more traditional proposals, which will coexist with the most modern ones. There will be 43 shows, which 12 are absolute premieres. Dance stands out once again as the center of the Festival.

The Festival de Jerez throughout its 26 editions has become an annual reference, a date marked in red on the calendar of flamenco fanatics from all over the world.

Not only you will be able to enjoy the shows  but also you will be able to  learn from them. Wrkshops will be held in numerous places and days. You will be able to learn about the diverse styles of the art of Flamenco.

Best places in Jerez to enjoy Flamenco

You can enjoy Flamenco  all throughout the year, not only during the Festival’s week.

Jerez offers us a selection of places and tablaos where we can listen to good cante played on the guitar, or witness typical flamenco dance such as bulerias, sevillanas or fandangos.

If you want to enjoy music while tasting the best wines, you can go to Tabanco la bodeguilla, Tablao flamenco La Bailaora or Tabanco El Pasaje. If you want amore authentic experience, you can go to a local performance at a Peña. A peña is a place where the locals meets to experience local music. Some of them are Peña Flamenca La Buleria or Peña Flamenca Los Cernícalos. Performances at Peñas are usually free.
